M&T Plastiek

Farmers are used to and more accepting of farming techniques handed down from generation to generation. At M&T Plastiek we are challenging the use of traditional borehole systems by meeting the three very basic needs of every farmer. With over 25 000 systems installed countrywide we can confirm we are less expensive, less labour intensive and less corrosive prone. With the bonus of an incredibly long lifetime span due to the composites used.

How does the price of M&T systems compare to conventional galvanized systems?

A farmer has no control over the price he receives for his product, but he always has control over his expenses. The M&T team will therefore never advise a farmer to remove a working windpump’s pipes to replace it with an M&T system. It just does not make sense in terms of cost.

However, if you do have to spend on the improvement of existing systems, consider investing the M&T system and reusing useful components that remain from your current borehole system at other boreholes. Below is a price comparison based on a 30-meter hole of an existing windpump tower and borehole, and labour at standard minimum wage.

* Farmers can further incorporate savings by buying longer lengths of pipe rolls and use as needed. The price of these rolls of pipe comes down significantly per meter the longer the length you purchase.

*Maintenance is minimal, usually 2 x leather washers at +/- R100 every 5 or so years. Thus the farmer needs to bring this into the equation when making the decision to stay with galvanised systems as the maintenance over five years are significantly more in terms of labour and cost of parts.

How does the price of M&T systems compare to conventional galvanized systems?

What farmers know all too well is that time = money

As such, the short answer is that every farmer has to work out how much time (in hours per year) is spent repairing and maintaining windpump pipes on their farm, and then compare that to the M&T system that requires 30 minutes of attention every five years to pull pipes and replace Leather washers instead or remove impurities depending on their findings.

This is not a sum we can make on behalf of anyone, because as the rate of pipe corrosion differs from region to region, so the amount of hours spent on windpump repairs will also differ. In our experience, however, in most cases it is definitely worthwhile when doing these calculations.
